A Writer's Journey of a Secluded Mind

Month

July 2013

Yeah!!!

Okay, so yesterday I so got to pull of the annoying high school girl jumping up and down squealing for joy.

Few weeks ago I submitted a poem to the semi-annual poem contest held by Eber & Wein Publishing. I think it was all of 52 words. Well yesterday in my po box is a letter from them. I look at it and think, “hmm…. I’ll open it up when I get down to work.” Get to work, something stops me from tearing the envelope open. I use a letter opener. My poem has not been returned. In the envelope is a letter and some paperwork. The letter?

I have been chosen as a semi-finalist. Yeah me!  Now I REALLY REALLY want to believe the letter. I will truly believe it when I have the Author’s Proof and then the book actually in my hand. So in hopes that I am truly understanding all of this correctly, I express mailed the paperwork back to the publishing house.

But still! The letter in and of itself required much squealing and jumping up and down for joy and of all things running in the building. Who wouldn’t? I wasn’t rejected. Yeah!! My being all of old, didn’t matter in this I was excited and quite justified with squealing.

Hmmm… next month sooo needs to get here.

Moral of the story- Keep checking the post office box more than once a week.

Absolute Write Blog Chain- July

In recent years, the phrase “Dog Days” or “Dog Days of Summer” have also found new meanings. The term has frequently been used in reference to the American stock market(s). Typically, summer is a very slow time for the stock market, and additionally, poorly performing stocks with little future potential are frequently known as “dogs.”[citation needed]

A casual survey will usually find that many people believe the phrase is in reference to the conspicuous laziness of domesticated dogs (who are in danger of overheating with too much exercise) during the hottest days of the summer. When speaking of “Dog Days” there seems to be a connotation of lying or “dogging” around, or being “dog tired” on these hot and humid days. A similar myth asserts that the time is so-named because rabid dogs are supposed to be the most common then. Although these meanings have nothing to do with the original source of the phrase, they may have been attached to the phrase in recent years due to common usage or misunderstanding of the origin of the phrase.

This month’s prompt:
Dog Days of Summer

In other words, the hottest and most sultry part of summer. Etymology lesson here. As always, can be prose, poetry, play, fiction, nonfiction. Participants can be found at the end of my post.

Sirius-

It was hot out, very hot. Sirius looked out the door, he had the garden to take care of but was not wanting to do it at all. He really didn’t feel like watering the plants, it was definetly too hot to do anything. Even answer the pounding on his door, wait pounding?

“About time!” The little bundle of fluff that bounded past his feet was followed by Julia, his best friend.

Sirius took in Julia’s look, obviously dressed for the heat in absolutely no clothes. Dang she made his Friday night party outfit look like a suit. “Do you not own any clothes?”

“What?” Julia looked at her swimsuit, “It covers everything. Not that you care.”

Sirius watched as Julia emptied the grocery bag she had been carrying into his fridge leaving a cantaloupe on the counter. Sighing he grabbed the cutting board and a knife, he knew he’d have to chop it. Even this was too much work.

“Thank God you have AC. Do you know how many of our friends don’t have AC? No of course you don’t. I swear that thermometer can hit 75 and we don’t see you.”

“Is there a point to all of this?” Sirius asked, checking to make sure that his cantaloupe had ended up in small chunks. Nothing was worse than trying to take a bite only to have to stop and cut it in half.

“Ummm, well I may have invited a few people over. How else are we going to see you and cool off? Really 100 is way to hot to be left on your own, and knowing you, you won’t even go out and water your garden. The garden we helped you plant.”

Sirius didn’t know what to say. That had been exactly what he was thinking. If Kyle had been here he would have watered the garden this morning, but well that wasn’t how the world worked. “Who is coming?”

“Well…”

“Where are we going?” Nick sat in Kevin’s car enjoying the AC. His had broken in his house last weekend and the service guy wasn’t able to come out until next week.

“Sirius’s. You haven’t met him yet, he hasn’t been at the club on a Friday in forever. Not that I blame him, what with the break up and all. And I just talked to him last week. Julia said we needed to come take care of the garden that we planted last month since Sirius doesn’t leave the house if it gets too hot. Well not unless someone makes him and then he completely plays a prima Doña…”

“Okay. One of your friends.”

“Yeah I said that.”

Nick didn’t say anything. He had learned to speak Kevin-ease back during the first semester of college seven years ago when they ended up in the same dorm room, Kevin could go on for hours if he had an audience. And being stuck in the car, well willing or not Nick was his audience.

“Anyways, it’s been at least a year since Kyle moved away and that is just way to long to lock yourself up in the house. We would have staged an intervention but Sirius goes to work and goes out with us on Wednesdays, just not the last two weeks because of the heat…”

Nick tuned Kevin out noticing that they were starting to drive into the nice older neighborhoods with the cute ramblers and large pieces of land. Kevin pulled into the circular drive of a nice little one story with what looked like a barn behind the house. Raising an eyebrow at Kevin, “Something you forgot to mention?”

Thursday Thoughts (a little early)

Ramadan

Ramadan starts tomorrow and I in my quest for new things I have decided that I will somewhat observe this. As a Christian we do fast at certain times, I look at this as a time to fast and renew myself. Let alone the physical benefits that will happen behind this.

This is thirty days of fasting. Of eating before 630 and not again until after 7 when I get home at night. While Ramadan is fasting from sun-up to sun-down, I have altered it to fit the way I have fasted before. That and I am drinking water. How I am going to go without coffee?? Hmmm….. maybe I have not thought this through as well as I should have.

No actually this will be a good thing, good for me. Good for the pocket book. I need to learn how to not spend. This will help, no buying food during the day. I think my hardest days will be Saturdays when I make my son lunch. Sundays I normally do not eat lunch.

“God wishes for us convenience not hardship (2:185), but by refusing to understand that God wants to help us slow down, practice self restraint and upgrade our remembrance of Him, they end up making the religion difficult to enjoy and appreciate. God only orders us not to eat and drink (2:187), and surely He does not want us to suffer while we are it! Just doing something because He said so (whether we need it or not), is Submission to Him (Islam).

Kindness of Strangers

Okay, just a little late on my Thursday thought, but as yesterday was July 4th, maybe I can be excused??

So this morning after a long night (2 am finally made it to bed), I needed caffeine. I went to Starbucks today and when I got up to the window to pay, the wonderful barista said that the car 3 or 4 cars up had paid for my drink. Evidently the lady felt bad because her order was so large causing the back up for everyone else. That made my morning.

I wish I knew who the lady was, I would thank her and so for the unknown lady who has shown such kindness, Thank You.

Random acts of kindness are so rare, well for me maybe. I do appreciate them. Acts of kindness happen everyday we just need to remember. And sometimes, we need to be the ones who perform them.
